At the Harbour School in Hong Kong, Cesar Harada teaches citizen science and invention to the next generation of environmentalists. He’s moved his classroom into an industrial mega-space where imaginative kids work with wood, metal, chemistry, biology, optics and, occasionally, power tools to create solutions to the threats facing the world’s oceans. There, he instills a universal lesson that his own parents taught him at a young age: “You can make a mess, but you have to clean up after yourself.”

But to teach science like him, with all that technology and money to create what they want to, only exists there.

This is not the reality in the most schools of the world. Let me correct myself; this is really really far from other school's reality, specially in "third world" countries.

So, how to teach kids to love science?

How do I do this in my school? I want these opportunities for my students!

Wow this is a amazing teacher it must be great to be a teacher in other countries that isn't America, since we're restricted to tests so teachers can't teach what they want, they have to teach what the test has. There's no free lance of teaching in America.

You just said in your Fibonacci talk that math should be inspirational – to make statistics the culmination says just the opposite.

They should learn to diagram sentences. And craft clear and meaningful rhetoric. They should learn to read and craft mathematical proofs. Both of these are more important than either calculus or statistics. They should read Euclid and understand what these proofs from (ONLY!) five postulates mean in terms of thought. It is about education and not clever tricks with methods and the dog and pony shows. If they are educated the rest will follow. I'm old and cantankerous and was educated a while ago. I have read the "Common Core" and think all may be lost if it is adopted…

calculus is like digital and stats is like analog. And that is why it is removed at first place. but i admit stats and probability is as recreational as calculus.

Probability yes, statistics no, too much statistics is outdated and based on a mathematics that was invented prior to computers. The example at the end is a perfect example of nonsense statistics that has gained meaning via convention – that is Standard Deviation. We should be using Absolute Deviation, the only reason we don't is because it's harder to MANIPULATE absolute deviation, but with computers that is no longer a problem.

Ad a math teacher, I couldn't agree more. I don't know how people get along without at least a basic understanding of probability. I find that my students love when we discuss the possible outcomes of an event. We spent nearly an entire period discussing how to calculate the odds of winning the lottery and the lesson was supposed to be American history. The best part about that lesson is hearing them wonder aloud why anyone plays the lottery given the odds against it.

I was never a big numbers person but I can tell you that understanding basic statistics helps you understand the world — probability and regression really puts things you thought were significant into perspective

I agree with his argument and I like the conclusion.

Educated people are more difficult to manipulate. We need stupid people, stupid people make the world go round. We couldn't make money without stupid people. Don't rock the boat, Benjamin.

Education should NOT be about utility, but about CULTURE, like art and philosophy. We don't need more technicians in our world, we need more REAL PEOPLE which are capable of deep thought and understanding of the world. The "economic mess" in which we are all into is the result of people not thinking abstractly enough to get the big picture behind our lives, people not living poetically enough to see the beauty of the world and the ways to preserve it. I strongly believe that calculus is a fundamental part of our culture, as is algebra: it shows how the beauty of pure thought can be helpful for humanity. Not teaching such "useless" subjects, limiting our children to "useful" techniques is dangerous. We must teach them to see the beauty for itself: mathematics in its essence is the pursuit of formal beauty. I wouldn't like to live in a world where people are classified as "useful" (economists? statisticians?) and "useless" (philosophers? pure mathematicians? musicians? painters?)

Yes, i think he is right.

You can teach some of the basic concepts of probability and statistics, without Calculus. But ultimately the more advanced ideas and theorems of Probability and Statistics require a knowledge of Calculus. If you just want to show students how to properly use various statistical formulas, and not worry about proving theorems, you need not bother them with rigorous Calculus.

All these people are mad because they couldn't pass calculus.

calculus has statistics in it, i think that people need to graduate in statistics and calculus for 1 or 2 years more than the normal otherwise there wont be a correct balance.
